This experiential workshop will introduce basic principles of Play Therapy and Sandplay. Play is a powerful mode for enhancing attachment and engagement, self-esteem, and relational trust. In the morning participants will explore various Play therapy theories as well learn some helpful techniques and applications in relation to Art Therapy Process and counselling practice. In the afternoon the focus will be on Sandplay in therapy, with theoretical foundations and how the process connects client’s emotions, symbolically, metaphorically and physically. Participants will have an opportunity to create their own sandtray and process it with another. The workshop will include case examples, group discussion, and opportunity to explore different play therapy modalities.

*Note: This workshop is rooted in a foundation of Art Therapy practice and expanded with a play-based approach; however it is not part of an official certification process for Play Therapists.

Learning Objectives:

  • to provide an experience of the wonder of play
  • to gain understanding about concepts of spontaneity, surprise, and surprise that are fundamental to a child’s need for play
  • to learn about qualities for effective play therapy and components such as engagement, assessment, and treatment considerations
  • to learn practical ideas that can be used for a wide variety of social-emotional and behavioural difficulties experienced by children in a various settings.

Nick Zwaagstra,  is the director of CATCC and past president of CATA. He offers clinical Art Therapy services, Art Therapy Training and Supervision.

He has over 15 years’ experience in counselling and Art Therapy. Experience includes: Mental health and wellness, HIV & AIDs support, Bereavement, Trauma, Stress mitigation, play therapy and more. Nick works with all ages and offers dyadic and group work too. He has successfully facilitated numerous workshops and training sessions in Canada and internationally.
